Applied Physics 

As a Master’s student in Applied Physics, you will learn more about the fundamentals of modern physics and its application. This top-rated programme will expand your knowledge of physics as a whole, while giving you the opportunity to specialise in a field of your choice. You will have the opportunity to tailor your programme to suit your individual interests in addition to the general part of the programme.

Applied Physics is all about understanding the fundamental laws of the physical world and finding ways to apply those laws in technical solutions. Applied Physicists use scientific principles to create or improve practical devices and systems and to contribute in many other fields. A great deal of the work done by physicists is not immediately visible. But without recent breakthroughs in physics, the mobile phone and the laptop would have been power-guzzling machines that weigh a ton and lab-on-a-chip technology would still be science fiction.

In the Master’s in Applied Physics we aim to achieve the ideal balance between ‘hardcore’ physics and engineering. Research is spread out over five clusters:

  • Physics of Fluids
  • Nanoelectronic Materials and Thin Films
  • Applied Nanophotonics
  • Soft Matter
  • Energy Materials and Systems

The themes that are covered within the programme are in perfect alignment with these five research clusters.

Nanotechnology 

Nanotechnology is an emerging field that brings together elements from traditional disciplines such as applied physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and biology. At the nanoscale, which covers structures that range from 1 to 100 nanometres, the physical and chemical properties of materials undergo quantitative and qualitative changes

The multidisciplinary research field of nanotechnology focuses on these changes with a view to designing and developing functional materials, structures, devices and systems. Nanomaterials offer a readily available resource with the potential to improve our lives in many ways. Examples include solar cells, energy innovations, or nanomedicine breakthroughs (e.g. lab-on-a-chip).

Nanotechnology at the university of Twente

Nanotechnology is a unique programme. No other university in the Netherlands offers you the chance to study for a Master’s degree in Nanotechnology. Moreover, you will conduct experiments in the world-renowned Nanolab, and you get the opportunity to do your master’s assignment within our MESA+ Institute. Like the research generally carried out in this field, our Master’s in Nanotechnology is multidisciplinary. On the one hand, it will offer you the chance to explore different research areas within the wider field of nanotechnology. On the other, you will be able to specialise in a specific research field of your choice, such as bionanotechnology, nanochemistry, nanophysics or nanosystems and -devices.

Educatie en Communicatie in de Bètawetenschappen

Heb jij passie voor wetenschap en techniek en wil je deze passie graag inzetten voor jonge mensen? Wil jij een leraar worden die voor een klas, of voor die ene leerling, het verschil maakt – en dat in een uitdagende, afwisselende baan waarin je je kunt blijven ontwikkelen? Kies dan voor de master Educatie en Communicatie in de Bètawetenschappen aan de Universiteit Twente (UT).

Het beroep van leraar is veelzijdig. Natuurlijk deel je jouw vakkennis met je leerlingen. Als mentor maak je het verschil voor een klas en ook voor individuele leerlingen: naast ouders of begeleiders speel jij een opvoedende, ondersteunende rol in een belangrijke fase in hun leven. Je maakt ze wegwijs in de maatschappij. Mogelijk ben jij degene op school die talent heeft voor het bedenken van nieuwe, creatieve manieren om je leerlingen vertrouwd te maken met, en enthousiast te krijgen voor, de leerstof. Of wellicht help jij je collega’s om zich verder te ontwikkelen.
